Shakti mudra, known as the gesture of power, is a powerful mudra that symbolizes the divine feminine energy, creativity, and inner strength. This mudra is particularly beneficial for calming the mind, enhancing emotional stability, and evoking deep relaxation.
By focusing on the alignment and energy of the fingers, shakti mudra channels prana (life force) to tap into the inner reservoir of power and creativity.
Thumb (Fire): Represents the element of fire and divine willpower. By covering the thumb with the index and middle fingers, shakti mudra helps to contain and balance the fire element.
Index and Middle Fingers (Air and Space): Represent the elements of air and space, associated with mental clarity and expansiveness. Folding these fingers over the thumb helps to seal in the fire element’s expansive capacity.
Ring and Little Fingers (Earth and Water): Represent the elements of earth and water, associated with grounding, stability, and emotional flow. Keeping these fingers extended and sealed channels grounding and stabilizing energy for creation to occur.
The word “Shakti ” means “power” or “energy” in Sanskrit. Shakti mudra represents the dynamic and creative force of the divine feminine energy. This mudra is particularly effective in activating the sacral chakra (svadhisthana), which governs creativity, emotions, and sensuality.

A peculiar gesture, shakti mudra is a powerful hand gesture to cultivate the power of the feminine energy within you. Rarely taught, this mudra is great for a personal meditation practice.
Shakti may translate to “power” but it also represents the divine feminine. The feminine in yoga philosophy is all of the manifest creation. It is the form of all things. It fills all containers with life and consciousness. Powerful feminine energy, shakti, becomes unruly and unbridled when it overflows or feels limited by it’s container.
Shakti mudra creates the space and control to create. By containing fire element within air and space, you can channel that energy through earth and water to shape and form anything you desire.
